Fellowship eligibility
Shepherd’s Spinal Cord Injury Medicine Fellowship Program welcomes candidates from all backgrounds and lifestyles. We offer one 12-month fellowship position available to individuals who:
- Have completed an ACGME-accredited residency in anesthesiology, emergency medicine, family medicine, internal medicine, neurology, neurological surgery, orthopedic surgery, pediatrics, physical medicine and rehabilitation, plastic surgery, or urology.*
- Are enrolled in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP), also known as The Match (National Matching Service Code 3451234001).
- Are eligible to work in the United States and can complete the required employment eligibility verification upon hire.
*Exceptional applicants from non-ACGME residency programs may be approved to complete a spinal cord injury fellowship; however, only applicants who have completed an approved ACGME residency are eligible for board certification in Spinal Cord Injury Medicine through the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.

The following must be submitted to be considered for an interview:
- Fellowship application form
- Personal statement
- Current CV
- United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) and/or COMPLEX-USA transcripts
- Copy of medical diploma and residency diploma (if applicable)
- Three letters of recommendation, sent with the application or directly from the letter writers
Resident matching program
Shepherd’s Spinal Cord Injury Medicine Fellowship participates in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP), also known as The Match. Information can be obtained directly from the NRMP website. Our NRMP Program Code is 3451234001. The Spinal Cord Injury Medicine Match is a subspecialty under the Rehabilitation Medicine Fellowship Match.
Interview process
Qualified candidates will be offered interviews via video conference as a preference. Onsite visits are not required but may be requested by applicants.
Fellowship salary
Annual stipend rates are set by Emory University School of Medicine and will be at the PGY-5 level/rate. Of note, fellows receive stipends monthly. Employment benefits are comprehensive and competitive.
Fellowship benefits
- 15 paid days off per academic year, with maximally five days per one month rotation, except during elective month, where any remaining vacation days can be taken.
- Up to 12 weeks of maternity/paternity leave, per FMLA guidelines.
