About Roberto

Roberto Jimenez, originally from Florida and now living in North Atlanta, began his rehabilitation journey at Shepherd Center in November 2023 after a severe forklift accident that caused incomplete paraplegia and below-the-knee amputation. He spent 10 months as an inpatient at Shepherd Center, participating daily in occupational therapy, physical therapy, and recreational outings, before continuing ongoing outpatient therapy.

Roberto hopes his portrait, titled “1 Leg Rob,” conveys a message of bravery, showing that while fear is real, pushing through it is possible. He wants his story to inspire confidence and hope in others facing difficult challenges. Though the photograph captures a moment of strength, it can’t fully express the emotional complexity and relentless effort behind his recovery.

Reflecting on his rehabilitation, Roberto highlights the importance of mindset, persistence, and the deep, family-like relationships he formed with therapists who supported and anticipated his needs. For him, hope means believing in progress beyond grim predictions and meeting challenges with faith, work, and self-trust.

To others on similar journeys, Roberto’s message is clear: fight relentlessly, believe in your strength, and maintain positive self-talk to overcome adversity. He expresses heartfelt gratitude for the Shepherd Center community — not only for its expert care but also for the genuine kindness and encouragement from staff, fellow patients, and family that made his recovery possible.

In his portrait

Roberto included his Laura Royster (occupational therapist), Victoria Lee (physical therapist), and Dr. Wesley Chay (primary physician) in his portrait. He chose them because they have been integral to his recovery from the very beginning and continue to play a vital role in his daily therapy and ongoing support. Their encouragement, care, and deep understanding of his needs made a lasting impact on his rehabilitation journey.
