About the brain injury medicine fellowship

The Brain Injury Medicine Fellowship at Shepherd Center provides you the opportunity to train at a top-ranked neurorehabilitation hospital. This one-year, ACGME-accredited program, in collaboration with Emory University School of Medicine, is designed to immerse you in the expertise and mentorship of Shepherd Center’s brain injury specialists — renowned leaders in traumatic brain injury (TBI) rehabilitation.

As a fellow, you’ll receive specialized training to evaluate, diagnose, and manage a full spectrum of brain injuries, from concussion to severe disorders of consciousness. Your fellowship experience will include hands-on learning in clinical management across every stage of recovery, providing a well-rounded understanding of brain injury medicine in real-world practice.

You’ll have the opportunity to work with some of the most complex brain injury cases, gaining unparalleled experience and exposure. Recognized as both a Spinal Cord Injury Model System and a Traumatic Brain Injury Model System by the National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research (NIDILRR), Shepherd Center is at the forefront of innovative treatments, technology, and research in brain injury care — offering you an extraordinary foundation for your career in this specialty.

Program goals

As a fellow, you’ll gain extensive inpatient experience at Shepherd Center, with a weekly continuity clinic integrated throughout the year to deepen your training. You’ll also have the chance to broaden your expertise through consulting and outpatient rotations at top partnering institutions, including Emory University Hospital, Piedmont Atlanta Hospital, and Grady Memorial Hospital — a Level 1 trauma and advanced comprehensive stroke center.

Brain injury medicine fellowship application requirements

We offer one 12-month fellowship position for fellows wishing to purusue post-graduate fellowship training in the physical medicine and rehabilitation subspecialty of brain injury medicine.
