Study overview

We’re inviting volunteers to join a research study testing a new, non-invasive device designed to help improve walking for individuals with Neuromyelitis Optica Spectrum Disorder (NMOSD) who have difficulty walking.

The device uses music and audio cues to help improve walking patterns. It adjusts the tempo based on real-time feedback from the foot sensors — making every session personalized to you.

What do you have to do?

  • Attend two in-person visits at the Shepherd Center (screening/baseline and post-intervention, about 3–4 hours each, 8 weeks apart)
  • During the 8 weeks, you will be asked to walk at home or in your community using the investigational device 3 times per week for 30 minutes each session (24 total sessions).

Participants will receive up to $300 and may be reimbursed for travel.

Study eligibility

To be eligible, participants must meet the following criteria:

  • Be 18–70 years old
  • Are diagnosed with NMOSD and history of transverse myelitis
  • Have difficulty walking (assistive devices allowed)
  • Are able to walk for 30 minutes continuously
  • Have no recent medication changes that affect the gait within the last three months
  • Have no relapses or hospitalization within the last three months
  • Have no physical therapy for lower limbs within the past four weeks for safety concerns
