About
Dr. Angela Beninga is a staff physiatrist at Shepherd Center’s Rehabilitation Medicine Clinic and the director of Shepherd Center’s Spinal Cord Injury Day Treatment Program. Originally from Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Dr. Beninga moved to Atlanta to join Shepherd Center in September 2012, bringing her extensive expertise in spinal cord injury rehabilitation.
Since starting at Shepherd Center, Dr. Beninga has been continually impressed by the facility’s reputation and the dedication of its staff. She appreciates the diverse patient population and the high level of care provided. Her motivation stems from the daily reminders of resilience and positivity demonstrated by her patients, which reinforce her gratitude and drive in her profession.
Dr. Beninga’s fascination with physical medicine and rehabilitation began during her athletic youth, where she marveled at the human body’s capacity to heal. Her passion for spinal cord injury medicine was solidified during a rotation in her residency, where she found joy in the diversity and complexity of cases. She values the unique challenges and the dynamic nature of treating spinal cord injuries, where no two days are the same.
Guided by a philosophy of finding the positive in every situation, Dr. Beninga believes that every experience, whether good or bad, enhances personal growth and outlook. She emphasizes the importance of seeing each patient as an individual and tailoring their treatment to their specific needs and circumstances.
Outside of her professional life, Dr. Beninga enjoys spending her free time outdoors. She loves hiking, kayaking, and any activity on the water. Known affectionately as “Big Ben” during her college basketball days due to her 6-foot, 1-inch stature, she continues to bring the same level of energy and enthusiasm to her work and hobbies.
