We recognize that driving is more than a skill — it’s a gateway to independence

Driving is essential for independence, allowing individuals to navigate their surroundings, commute, and engage in daily activities. Shepherd Center’s Driving Evaluation and Rehabilitation Program helps individuals with disabilities learn, maintain, or regain the ability to drive. We offer thorough evaluations, personalized guidance, and access to advanced driving systems to enhance your skills and confidence. Our goal is to support your journey toward greater mobility and self-sufficiency, helping you reclaim the driver’s seat with renewed independence.

Who does the driving evaluation and rehabilitation program serve?

Our Driving Evaluation and Rehabilitation Program specializes in providing clinical evaluations and driving assessments to drivers and passengers who are 16 years of age and up with spinal cord injury, brain injury, and other neurological conditions, as well as patients who have cognition-related impairments, such as Alzheimer’s or dementia, or other potential driving safety concerns. Some clients require adaptive vehicle equipment, while others are evaluated to drive a “regular vehicle” without equipment. A referral from a medical doctor is required for the driver evaluation. To learn more about how to begin the referral process, visit our Appointments and Referrals page.

Driving evaluation and rehabilitation services

We understand that driving is more than just a means of transportation; it symbolizes freedom and autonomy. That’s why our dedicated team of highly trained, certified, and experienced professionals is here to support you every step of the way.

Your journey begins with a thorough clinical evaluation. This evaluation is not about limitations; it’s about understanding your abilities in the context of any disabilities or cognitive impairments you may face. Our clinical team conducts a 1-hour evaluation, considering your physical, cognitive, balance, and visual abilities to determine the best action for your driving future. This is followed by a 60-90-minute driving assessment. Results and recommendations will be reviewed at the end of the session.

  • In-depth clinical evaluation: Our experts conduct a detailed examination of your physical, visual, and cognitive capabilities to tailor the evaluation to your unique needs.
  • Driving assessment: You’ll experience a driving assessment to evaluate your driving skills, ensuring a holistic understanding of your capabilities, with or without adaptive driving equipment. This is an on-road assessment around local Atlanta neighborhoods, typically at lower traffic times. For new or inexperienced drivers, we drive in a low-traffic area.

Once we’ve identified the areas for improvement, it’s time to embark on the driving rehabilitation phase. We have seven specially equipped cars and vans containing various low and high-tech adaptive equipment. We also train drivers who do not require any adaptive equipment. The goal is simple: to empower you with the skills and confidence to navigate the roads safely.

  • Adaptive equipment integration: Our vehicles are equipped with various adaptive technologies, from essential modifications to high-tech solutions, ensuring a customized approach to meet your needs.
  • Personalized training plan: You’ll work with our experts on a customized training plan, focusing on the areas identified during the evaluation and building your skills at a pace that suits you.

In the rapidly evolving world of adaptive vehicle technology, staying informed is crucial. Our program includes adaptive technology training to familiarize you with the latest innovations, ensuring you’re confident and comfortable with the tools that enhance your driving experience.

  • Hands-on learning: Our experts guide you through hands-on training sessions, allowing you to master adaptive technologies specific to your vehicle.

Your needs are unique, and so are the solutions we provide. Our team offers consultation and vehicle fittings to ensure that the adaptive equipment and vehicles selected meet your specific requirements perfectly.

  • Personal consultation: We sit down with you to understand your lifestyle, preferences, and challenges, ensuring the adaptative equipment and vehicle recommendations align with your goals.
  • Custom fitting: Our experts meticulously identify the equipment you need, ensuring maximum comfort and functionality tailored to your needs.

The journey doesn’t end with the purchase of adaptive equipment and modifications for your vehicle. We provide follow-up training in the comfort of your car, ensuring that you’re confident and capable in your everyday driving environment.

  • Real-world application: When appropriate, our team joins you in your vehicle, providing hands-on guidance and support as you navigate familiar roads, building the confidence to drive independently.
