This course will present the physiological differences between acute and chronic pain, including the anatomic pathways, to provide guidance for effective treatment strategies. A focused presentation on low back pain will center on the current, evidence-based guidelines for treatment. Opiate use, current regulations, evidence for and against prescribing, as well as safe prescribing habits will be presented. Alternative and complementary methods of treatment will be highlighted with discussions on the evidence and validity for therapeutic interventions and pain psychology in treating chronic pain.
