About

Dr. Payal Fadia is a board-certified physician in physical medicine and rehabilitation, with additional subspecialty certification in brain injury medicine. She serves as the Medical Director of Post-Acute Brain Injury Services at Shepherd Center, where she has been a physiatrist in the Acquired Brain Injury and Neurospecialty units since 2008. Dr. Fadia’s journey to medicine was inspired by her pediatrician, whose compassionate care left a lasting impression and solidified her desire to pursue a career in healthcare.

Initially drawn to neurology, Dr. Fadia discovered her passion for physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R) during an elective rotation in her residency. She was captivated by the potential to help patients with neurological impairments achieve significant improvements in their recovery. While neurologists excel in diagnosing and treating conditions, Dr. Fadia found fulfillment in the hands-on aspect of rehabilitation, where she could directly enhance her patients’ quality of life.

Dr. Fadia’s commitment to her field is reflected in her work at Shepherd Center, which she describes as a uniquely compassionate and integrated environment. She highlights the staff’s universal dedication to patient and family care, emphasizing the collaborative approach that involves therapists, nurses, case managers, and neuropsychologists. This team-oriented strategy ensures that both patients and their families are supported throughout the rehabilitation process.

Through her work, Dr. Fadia has gained a profound appreciation for the resilience of the human spirit. She has witnessed patients overcome tremendous obstacles, demonstrating remarkable inner strength and determination. This resilience is particularly evident in her adolescent patients, whose recovery journeys are both challenging and inspiring. Dr. Fadia finds immense reward in seeing patients progress from minimally conscious states to higher levels of function, as they regain their ability to communicate and engage with the world.
